The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Review

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Review

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is a remarkable open world adventure. The land is big, beautiful and one of the best things about this game. Side adventures and going off to do your own thing is all the rage in games these days and The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt got it right. The world is so large that you feel overwhelmed by it, and that is a good thing. It will provide 100 plus exploring hours easily.

The story is adequate and even if you did not play the first two installments of the franchise you will be fine getting in on this, the best release of the three. The story is adequate but the missions are more of the old rehashed fetch and go talk to this one to find that out. The quests do become repetitive but the gameplay is awesome.

Combat and overall controls have always been a bit cluncky with this series. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is not as bad but the clusiness still remains somewhat. Sign casting (or spells) has become more improved and available to those who would like to play more of a caster than a weapon wielder or any combination thereof. Potions are also more robust and easily incorporated into your arsenal while meditation has been removed.

Skill trees consist of combat, alchemy and magic. You can upgrade abilities but you have a limited amount of slots, so you must choose wisely when deciding which abilities to use. You also have to remember to use them. This prevents an overpowered character in end game and makes the game more interesting for longer playing times.

Loading times are one downfall here. Menus and switching maps takes too long. The framerate does drop and becomes a minor issue as well. This performance may cause some hiccups but it is definitely not a deal killer.

The weapon and armor crafting system has a lot of options and can even be confusing at times, but does provide plenty of content. The economy is tough and you will need to earn your way forward. Monster hunting contracts proved to be fun and useful here.

Many games make claims that your decisions will impact the world but The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt delivers on that promise where most games don’t. What you do and the decisions you make will not only change the tone and feel of the world but even the look. There are no moral judgments made by the game either so you can be as good or bad as you want to be and not miss out on anything, but it does matter to the world.

As with the other two earlier installments of The Witcher, this is a mature game with adult themes and even sex and nudity so beware playing if you have small children around.

Overall The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is a great RPG and worth playing for the sheer vastness of the open world. We have been told this will be the last installment for Geralt, The White Wolf.

We rank The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt as an 8.5 out of 10.
